What insurance do NDIS support workers need?

Look first at public liability, accident insurance and professional indemnity, because the NDIS Practice Standards name all three.

NDIS Practice Standards

The NDIS Practice Standards are the rules registered NDIS providers are audited against. On insurance, they say:

“Appropriate insurance is in place, including professional indemnity, public liability and accident insurance.”

If you work for an agency, ask what its insurance covers you for. If you work for yourself, participants, plan managers and platforms may ask to see proof of your cover. That proof is a certificate of currency, the insurer's document showing your cover is active.

Public liability

Public liability pays for claims if a participant or someone else is injured, or their property is damaged, because of your work.

For exampleA participant trips over your bag in their hallway and breaks a wrist.

Professional indemnity

Professional indemnity pays for claims that your advice or professional service caused someone harm or a financial loss.

For exampleA family says a support plan you put together left a participant without care they needed.

Personal accident and income protection

Personal accident and income protection pay part of your income if an injury or illness stops you working for a while.

For exampleYou hurt your back lifting and can't take shifts for six weeks.

We can also arrange workers compensation, which pays your employees' wages and medical costs if they're hurt at work. Cyber insurance helps with the costs of a data breach or hack, and business insurance covers your office and equipment. Commercial motor insurance covers a car or van you use for work.
