Support worker insurance cost

How much does NDIS support worker insurance cost?

We don't publish prices, because each insurer prices your work from the details you give. The price can change with the support you give, whether you have staff, how much cover you choose and any past claims.

What changes the price

Insurers can look at these things when they price your cover. You can change some of them, such as the amount of cover and how your work is described.

  1. The support you give.

Personal care, community access and cleaning can each be priced differently by an insurer.

  2. Staff and contractors.

A business with staff or contractors can be priced differently from one person working alone on an ABN.

  3. What you earn.

Your turnover, the money your work brings in before costs, can change the price.

  4. Physical work.

Lifting, driving and transfers, where you move a participant from their bed to a chair, can change the price. This shows up in the price of personal accident cover, which can pay you while an injury keeps you off work.

  5. Your limit.

The limit is the most a policy pays for a claim, and a higher limit can cost more.

  6. Past claims.

Claims made against you before can lift the price.

  7. How long you've worked.

A business that's just starting has no claims history to show an insurer, and that can change the price.

  8. How your work is described on the policy.

If that description doesn't match what you really do, an insurer can refuse a claim later.

Why insurers quote different prices

Each insurer weighs these things its own way. Two insurers can look at the same worker and give very different prices, and some may not offer cover at all.

As brokers, we can take your details to other insurers if one says no.

Using your own car for support work

A private car policy can exclude driving for work, such as taking a participant to an appointment. Ask your car insurer if your policy covers this before you drive a participant. If it doesn't cover work use, commercial motor insurance, a policy for vehicles used for work, is the cover to ask about.

How to get a price that fits your work

  • List all the support you do, from personal care to cleaning, so the quote matches your real work.
  • Ask about the excess, the amount you pay towards a claim. A higher excess can lower the price.
  • Check the exact limit your agreement or platform asks for, so the quote is for the right amount.
  • Review your cover each year before it renews, especially if your work has changed.

What we'll ask before we get you quotes

Get prices for your cover

Give us your details once and we'll get prices from insurers for the work you do.

We'll ask about:

  • the types of support you give
  • whether you're registered, work on an ABN or employ staff
  • roughly what your work brings in each year
  • whether you drive participants
  • any limit you've been asked to hold
  • any past claims

How much is insurance for a self-employed support worker?

Each insurer sets the price from your details, such as the support you give, your turnover, your limit and any past claims. We don't publish prices. Tell us about your work and we'll ask insurers what they'd charge.

How much does a $10 million public liability limit cost?

It varies between insurers, and each one looks at your work and what you earn. The NDIS Practice Standards, which registered providers are audited against, ask for appropriate insurance but don't name an amount. Check the limit in your agreement or the platform's terms, then tell us and we'll get quotes for it.

Does my car insurance cover me while I drive participants?

It may not. Private car policies can exclude work use, so ask your car insurer in writing before you drive a participant.

Why did one insurer decline me?

Each insurer decides which work it wants to cover. A decline from one doesn't mean others will say no, so ask us to try other insurers.
